Interview with Kevin Shepherd ahead of Puzzle Project on DSI

Hi Kevin, how’s it going?

Hello there! I’ve just come back from holiday in Egypt thanks.

We have seen a number of tracks and remix’s from you a few years ago on labels like Impact, but not much recently. What have you been up to?

Yeah I did a track called Dreamaker on Impact a good few years ago. Back in the late 90s I was doing Trancecore for Digital Beats, Hetec Records and a few others. I have done a few things since Dreamaker but never released them. I had a little girl which has taken up a lot of time, but now back with a vengeance, working hard in the studiowith Matt Church on our label Red Sky Recordings.

You set up Red Sky with Matt Church and Phil Lankester what was the idea behind the label and what plans do you have for it in the future?

Matt and I have been playing with the idea for a few years now. We got a couple of solid tracks together and thought it was time to put it in to action. Matt thought it would be a great idea to invite Phil into the project and with good reason. Phil is a well clued up bloke when it comes to the hard dance scene being a DJ/Promoter and now making tunes, so there you go, Red Sky was born. With regards to the plans for the future, I am not too sure yet as we just want to get Red Sky off the ground and rocking. We have loads of tracks in the pipe line though, and they are all corkers from some awesome up and coming producers, which is what the label is about!

You have worked with the likes of Steve Blake, Simon Rutherford and Matt Church, what collaboration plans have you got in the future and who would you lost like to work with?

Now you’re asking a question! Well first I would like to do a Psy track with Phil as I’m really getting in to Psy trance. Second I would like to collab with all the Red Sky artists as we have some awesome talent there, And as a dream collab would be with a trance duo called the Webster Brothers aka TRANSA. They were very big back in 98 to 2002ish I think they run Hook Recordings and UG Records.

What makes you and Matt work so well in the studio and what do each of you bring to a track?

Who says me and Matt work well together!?! Only joking. I’m not sure really, we just like the same stuff in music. As you know Matt plays out a lot so he is on the ball with what’s good and what’s not. We have been friends for years and years now. We just gel well together.

What equipment have you got in the studio and what would you most like?

Minimal really, my studio has a Mac with Logic 8, Ableton 7, various instruments and plugs oh and the liquid mix. We have Rokit 5 and Mackies 626s for monitors. I would really like to get a Virus TI but I would settle for a Virus B or C.
I used to have a Virus B but sold it. I don’t know why now but never mind lol

You’re set to play a classic trance set at Puzzle Project pres Red Sky, what era or trance will you be playing and what sort tracks and what memories do they hold for you from the past?

I will be playing 1998 to 2001ish, think of Peach at Camden Palace back in the day and then you will get the idea.

Well I’m off now, see you all at Puzzle Project!
Big Kev over and out...
